Researchers have successfully helped a paralyzed woman speak again using a brain implant powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
The study, led by the chairman of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Edward Chang, was published in two separate reports in Nature on Wednesday. The implant was also showcased in a video uploaded by Nature to YouTube on Tuesday.
Speaking to UC Berkeley Engineering press, Gopala Anumanchipalli, who co-authored the paper, explained that they used a new device called a SPEECH NEUROPROSTHESIS, which helped Ann, who became paralyzed due to a stroke, speak and convey emotions again through interconnected devices and other technological methods.
