What do you call a baby giraffe? 🦒 Don’t have a cow, but… it’s a calf!
Currently unnamed, this baby Reticulated giraffe was born at the Metro Richmond Zoo on Aug. 2 to parents Iris and Wakati. He was the first giraffe calf born at the zoo in nearly four years. The Reticulated giraffe is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, which tracks global conservation status and extinction risk.
If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the newborn, you can spot both mom and baby in a temporary holding area viewable from the giraffe hill in the park. But don’t squint your eyes in search of a puppy-sized baby—you might be shocked to learn that the calf is already six feet tall and weighs 175 lbs. The zoo noted in a media release about the giraffe’s birth that he would likely double in height during his first year.
