#Repost @digspgh ・・・ When it officially closed June 30, 2017, SCI Pittsburgh (known locally as Western Penitentiary) ended a history dating back to the Civil War. The prison was home to nearly 1,800 people at any given time, and at its peak, more than 800 employees roamed its 21-acre complex. A football team called the Western Penitentiary Stealers and college courses were just some of the programs designed to rehabilitate the prison’s inmates during their stays, but there’s plenty more to see in our full story.
