Dear Oscar Grant, ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You probably wouldn't remember me, but we went to church together at Palma Ceia Baptist Church in Hayward, CA back in the day. Although you were a few years older than me, we both grew up in that church. We both sat through Pastor Bennett's (RIP) sermons, listened to the choir sing the gospel, and took in the warm and uplifting spirit of a Black church that was (and still is) a pillar of that community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was these moments at Palma Ceia that made your unjust and untimely demise hard to take-in. It hit close to home. I'm born and raised in Oakland. I understand the pressures that young Black males face. To see somewhat that I've shared experiences with, in a place of worship and on the basketball court, get cut-down in such a violent and indifferent manner, let me know that it could happen to me and anyone like me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Oscar, you were a value in life and you are still a value.
