Rosa Parks, an inaugural Freedom Award honoree, was a courageous civil rights activist, community leader, and wife.
-
Called “The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement” she dedicated her life to the fight for social justice.
-
Angry over the lynching of Emmett Till and learning of the acquittal of Till’s murder, she decided to stand up by remaining seated on a Montgomery Buss on December 1, 1955. Her refusal to move for a white passenger led to her arrest and sparked the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott.
