I spent an hour one-on-one with Nick Saban when I was getting recruited.
Here’s why I didn’t pick Alabama.
1. I was a receiving tight end, and there was one guy in my high school class who was ranked ahead of me who fit that exact same description.
His name was O.J. Howard, and he was committed to Alabama.
I wasn’t scared to compete, but tight end isn’t like quarterback where only one guy sees the field for a whole season.
That next year, OJ and I were both named to All-American Teams, so it worked out.
Sometimes it’s all about “fit” and putting yourself in the best situation to succeed.
2. The biggest reason I didn’t go to Alabama was it wasn’t Penn State. I had the chance to play for a team I had rooted for since I was a kid.
It was less than a two-hour drive for my family to see me play. Alabama is a lot of things, but it wasn’t home.
