When I was 6, my grandpa moved to America for a better life and to raise me and my siblings since my parents were always working. 4 years ago, he made the conscious decision to leave everything behind in America to go back to Korea and start a business at 84 years old. He is currently 88 and has the energy like someone half his age.
Before arriving to Asia, I sent him a letter promising him that I’d come live with him before I make any life changes that would physically require me to be elsewhere. So once mandatory quarantine was dropped and it was easier to travel to Korea, I booked a one-way.
I spent 1.5 weeks living with grandpa in Donghae (동해), a beautiful beach town on the east side of Korea, and being with him immediately made me feel like I was home. Being away and traveling alone for 8 months has its rough moments but damn, 4 years alone at 88 — I can’t even imagine.
