The
#MissionToPsyche spacecraft is *about* the size and weight of a large SUV. Equipped with solar panels, which are a bit wider than a tennis court, they power the cameras, spectrometers and other systems.
To get Psyche off Earth, a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will be used. But once in space, Psyche will mainly use something called ion propulsion.
It will orbit the asteroid, Psyche, repeatedly starting from 435 miles out and then going down to 46 miles from the surface — and perhaps even lower. The journey to Psyche will take nearly six years, and once it arrives in August 2029, the probe will spend 26 months mapping the asteroid’s geology, topography and gravity.
Throughout this journey, the team of scientists and engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Arizona State University will stay in regular contact with Psyche using NASA's Deep Space Network, a system of large radio antennas.
