SMASH! If you see a spotted lantern fly, follow the "Smoosh Protocol" - step on them, crush them, swat them. You can also report seeing them or their eggs by calling 1-888-4BADFLY (seriously), the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture hotline.    The insects are an invasive species native to China, India, and Vietnam but was first found here in 2014. It feeds on many trees, sucking the sap and excreting honeydew which can build up and become a become a growth area for sooty mold. Ew.    If you're thinking of using pesticide, consult the Department of Agriculture website for approved methods. Do not use those sticky-tree-tapes! They are a potential hazard to our birds, who can get stuck on them as well and injure themselves.
