On this day in 1957, Althea Gibson made history as the first black athlete to win the US Open National Tennis Championship. But her journey to the top was far from easy. In 1951, she broke barriers as the first black athlete to compete in Wimbledon. Before 1940, African American tennis players were banned from official U.S Tennis competitions, but Althea and other great athletes refused to be held back by racial inequality.
Their perseverance paved the way for future talents like Arthur Ashe, Serena Williams, Yannick Noa, Venus Williams CocoGauff, Naomi Osaka, Gaël Monfils, Frances Tiafoe, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, Dustin Brown, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and many others to come!
