Based in Los Angeles, Roberto Benavidez explores the potential of the piñata and the underlying themes of race and transgression he detects within the form, mediated by his self-described identity as a “South Texan, queer, figurative sculptor.” Eric Standley, a professor of art at Virginia Tech, builds intricate, imagined cut-paper “artifacts” using vector-based software and CNC laser engraving machines.
