During a thunderstorm, the area power lines were struck by lightning causing East to have a 30-minute power outage. Students were held in their 5th hour class until the power returned at 1:26 p.m. Once power returned,  the staff told them to return to a shortened 7th hour class. This power outage was just a setback to scheduling as it shortened a block period 30 minutes on top of the already shortened week according to chemistry teacher Steven Appier.  Last time there was a power outage like this was on Feb. 24, 2020 when a car crashed into a power line pole along 75th street. Following that outage, staff kept the students for the whole 5th hour but dismissed school shortly after 5th hour due to the longer length of the outage.  “During the last power outage, we were in class in the middle of the 5th hour and the power just went out.” Chemistry teacher Susan Hallstrom said. “It was really dark, but we lit candles and continued class.” During today’s outage, bored students began t...
