Auburn and Samford first faced off way back in 1903 in what was Samford's second year of fielding a team.
Back then the school wasn't named Samford yet. It originally opened as Howard College before being renamed in 1965. And yes, it's the same Samford family as Auburn's Samford Hall and Samford Stadium at Plainsman Park.
The Tigers and Bulldogs would be conference rivals in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Auburn would leave the SIAA in 1922 to become a founding member of the SEC. Samford would bounce in and out of the conference until leaving for good around 1931.
The two teams would face off a few times as non-conference foes until 1945. There was then a nearly 50-year gap between meetings until the reunion in 1992. This weekend's game will only be the sixth meeting since World War II and only the fourth since the turn of the century.
