A recent survey unveiled a statistical trend of Asian Americans concealing their culture in fears of ridicule and a pressure to assimilate.
The survey, conducted by Pew Research Center between July 2022 and January 2023, revealed that 1 in 5 Asian American adults admitted to hiding their customs, food, clothing or religious practices from non-Asians. Various factors were identified as influencing the likelihood of Asian Americans hiding their heritage like age group, familial generation, immigration status, bilingualism, and individual cultural influences.
U.S.-born children of Asian immigrants are the most likely among Asian Americans to hide part of their heritage at 32%.
