Today we celebrate a cancer visionary, who led a transformative research effort to program patients’ own immune cells to target their disease. Dr. Carl June, the Richard W. Vague Professor in Immunotherapy in the Perelman School of Medicine and director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies at Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center, has been awarded the 2024 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for his groundbreaking work in developing CAR T cell therapy. The revolutionary approach has led to six FDA approvals to treat blood cancers, bringing new hope to thousands of patients across the world. “This award is not only a testament to Dr. June’s outstanding contributions to science, but also a shining example of the caliber of discoveries and research which Penn faculty set their sights upon,” says pennpresident Liz Magill. Congratulations, Dr. June! #BreakthroughPrize #Immunotherapy #PrecisionMedicine
