Through the biggest public health concerns of the last 75 years, Children's has been on the leading edge of pediatric care when it's needed most. Founded during the worldwide polio epidemic, Children’s original hospital team took immediate action to serve patient families in the 1940s. Polio could leave children paralyzed and in need of breathing assistance, and at the peak of the crisis, Children's had 29 iron lungs working mightily to save precious young lives. Thankfully, the epidemic's threat waned in the years that followed, and a vaccine developed in the mid-'50s helped eradicate the disease by the '70s. Decades later, Children's has continued to meet the evolving needs of its communities with excellence, innovation and advocacy.
