Five strokes back after a one over par third round, American Justin Leonard played the round of his life in 1997 to claim the 126th Open Championship at Royal Troon. With a stacked leaderboard including compatriots Fred Couples and Jim Furyk, Leonard had to fend off players at the peak of their powers. Europeans Jesper Parnevik and Darren Clarke were five and three shots clear of Leonard on Sunday, both will feel like it was an opportunity missed with disappointing finishes. Very few could stick with the blistering pace set my the American. Leonard had six birdies on the front nine in the final round; he added two more at 16 and 17 for a stunning 65. Leonard won his only major championship and was the fifth consecutive American to win at Royal Troon. #TheOpen #151stOpen #ForgedByNature -- Visit TheOpen.com for the greatest stories in golf Keep in touch with us!
