Would you?! If scrambling in the dark on wet, slippery rocks sounds like a good time, then this adventure is for you! The lava river cave aka the lava tube is 14 miles north of Flagstaff. There is a large parking lot (and a restroom). After a short walk you’ll come to an actual hole in the ground and that is where you’ll enter the cave. For 300 feet you will be in a full scramble. In. The. Dark. The entire cave is about 3/4 of a mile long. Once the scramble is over, you’re still walking on uneven rocks and clearance can be low. People bonk their heads so wearing a helmet isn’t a bad idea. You need two to three light sources. I had a headlamp and a flashlight. You will want your hands free and the extra light source is in case your batteries die or one breaks because it’s pitch black in there. It’s chilly in the cave so bring a jacket!
