Charbonneau officially became part of Charbonneau on Saturday. A six-foot tall bronze sculpture of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau in the arms of his mother, Sacajewea, was unveiled Saturday in the commercial center of Charbonneau, the leafy subdivision of Wilsonville. The high-end planned community was named for the famed explorer, mountain man and gold miner. Charbonneau residents staged a major fundraising effort to pay for the statue. “This all came together in nine months,” said Cathi McLain of the Charbonneau Arts Association. “We raised more than $50,000 to purchase the sculpture.” It was unveiled and dedicated to the sounds of Native-American drumming and singing provided by a trio of drummers from the Warm Springs, Klamath and Paiute tribes.
