Understanding our past is key to shaping a better future. #OnThisDay in 2011, the Southern Poverty Law Center released a study that graded 35 out of 50 states an “F” when it came to teaching about the civil rights movement. The study found that many schools only summarize the movement with two references to civil rights and a statement: Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his “I Have a Dream” speech.
