The algae forming in Lake Okeechobee in Florida is threatening wildlife, pets, people and cities. The lake has a history of challenging officials’ efforts to engineer it, and now phosphorus fertilizers have encouraged the growth of a poisonous algae. The state and the Army Corps of Engineers are trying to reduce the toxic flows to the coasts with a controversial re-engineering plan that has been decades in the making, including building a new lake from scratch to contain and decontaminate Okeechobee’s discharges. #florida #okeechobee #lakeokeechobee #pollution
