I live with depression. And generalized anxiety disorder. This isn’t a secret. I live it out loud. It’s a massive part of who I am. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and an important time to say it out loud, to continue the work of minimizing stigma. For the last few months I’ve been moving through a particularly tough season of depression. One of the harder ones I’ve ever experienced. The realness of it all is this - it is different for everyone. And what you see on the outside is not representative of what’s on the inside. The invisible 🫥 illness may be tearing someone apart beneath the surface, it may be adding insurmountable weight to their shoulders, and disrupting the streams of joy normally experienced. It’s an asshole that shows up when you least expect it, and always overstays its welcome. Mental health is health. And there is no shame in the illness.
