I was once told by a boy that when I wore a baseball hat I was less pretty, because it wasn't very feminine. And perhaps I should refrain from doing so.
I carried those words with me for years. I gave them power. They made me smaller. I stopped wearing baseball hats almost entirely, because I wanted him to love me and think I was pretty.
Yeah. That was a bunch of bullshit.
There are two lessons here. The first, words have power. Tremendous power. People wear them and become them. We should use them wisely. Be kind and generous. Use them to lift others up, not break or weigh them down.
The second, you don't have to own the words and expectations of others. You don't have to wear them or carry them. And if you find yourself doing that anyway? Take them off. Shed them. Discard them like yesterday's trash. Because that's what they are. They are in NO WAY an indication of you and your worth.
So wear that hat backwards and own it.
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AS YOU ARE.
