Heroes from #YourAcademy honored by the American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming. One such hero is SSgt. Eryka Ely. On July 28, 2019, SSgt. Ely found out that a friend had been in an altercation and was in danger. Without hesitation, she rushed to help and found her friend was critically injured. She called emergency services and began life-saving measures, creating a compression bandage from part of her shirt and administering CPR until paramedics arrived. As the Red Cross put it, "SSgt. Ely put herself at risk and went above and beyond to save her friend. She is truly an everyday hero." 2nd Lt. Kristen McKenney was also honored as a hero for the 220+ volunteer hours she put in while a cadet. Then-C1C McKenney volunteered at several organizations including The Resource Exchange’s, Break Time program where she cared for children with special needs to allow their families time to take a break and recharge.
