For 15-year-old Andrew, a standout football and soccer athlete, Spring Break took an unexpected turn last March when swelling in his neck brought him to Children's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The situation quickly turned dire as he slipped into septic shock and his organs began shutting down. Led by Dr. Ali Ibrahimiye and Dr. Sidharth Mahapatra, Children's team sprang into action, putting Andrew on an advanced form of life support called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ultimately saving his life. With family and friends near and far supporting him, the teen spent more than three weeks in the hospital and has been on a long road to full recovery since, overcoming a 40-pound weight loss and challenges with walking, talking, vision and hearing.   Brave Andrew and his family returned to Children's this week to reunite with his care team and share their gratitude, eliciting smiles and happy tears.
