How do you find community at college? For some students, it’s easy — they make friends and build relationships like it’s first nature. But for other students, especially those on the autism spectrum, it’s not that simple. “It was hard to find community with anyone, regardless of whether they were disabled as well,” Jameson Walker, an autistic student at Loyola, said. “If you’re somebody with social anxiety, autism, really any neurodiversity, that can be super hard to do.” Finding community can also prove difficult if you have trouble finding support from your school. Sophomore Lilly Allan both said they’ve had a hard time communicating with Loyola’s Student Accessibility Center and Wellness Center. SAC Interim Director Karen Pettus said the department will be making changes to better support students. “We’re working with faculty, working with student affairs, working with a number of different offices to better understand students with disabilities,” Pettus said.
