“Shelly Niro: Little Doors in My Mind” is part of our short video series, “Collapsing the Distance Between Us.” Each piece in this series goes behind the scenes, visiting different art studios to listen and learn from local artists and their unique artistic practices.
Shelley Niro is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography, painting, beadwork, and film. Born in Niagara Falls, New York, in 1954, Shelley Niro is a member of the Turtle Clan of the Kanyen’kehaka (Mohawk) Nation, from the Six Nations of the Grand River territory. Her art focuses on themes of identity, and challenges stereotypes and colonial representations of Indigenous peoples, with a particular focus on Indigenous women. With directness and humour, she crafts new narratives based on the past, pop culture, and her own lived experience.
