The semifinalists were announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and the 16,000 who are being honored represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors Semifinalists in the 69th annual program were determined by their performance on the Preliminary SAT; the PSAT is also titled the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Finalists will be announced in February.
