This trail camera footage of a Mexican wolf pup serves as a testament to the efficacy of the Endangered Species Act, which has now been around for 50 years. Mexican gray wolves are a subspecies native to Mexico and the southwestern United States that were nearly wiped out in the U.S. by the mid-1970s. The subspecies was saved following the passage of the Endangered Species Act in 1973 through the captive breeding of last six surviving wolves. Though their numbers have since grown to a reported 241 wolves in 2022, Mexican gray wolves remain one of the rarest and most imperiled mammals on the continent and still suffer from a lack of genetic diversity.
