On October 1, the office of California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he would be appointing Butler, the president of abortion rights organization EMILY's List, as the state's new interim U.S. senator. Butler will be succeeding Dianne Feinstein, who died on September 29 at the age of 90.
The appointment makes Butler the first out LGBTQIA+ person to represent California in the Senate, as well as the third Black woman senator in the chamber's history. #ICYMThis
