Have you ever wondered who Martha Rivers Ingram was besides just the namesake of The Ingram Commons? Well today, you’re in for a lesson. Martha Rivers Ingram, the wife of the late E. Bronson Ingram, served as Chairman of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust from 1999 to 2011. Under her leadership, Vanderbilt underwent massive growth, completing the first phase of its residential college system (The Commons) as well as beginning the second phase. Ingram also oversaw the construction of the Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts, a remembrance of her dedication to supporting the local arts. In 2011, the same year she retired as Chairman, Vanderbilt renamed The Commons in her honor to celebrate the contributions she has made to our university.
