Local journalists knew about Schrunk’s slight limp – the former Navy man had been wounded during World War II. But most of the men in the courthouse hallway were from out of town. They’d come to Portland for this moment alone, to witness the humiliation of a politician. Schrunk pushed through the pack of reporters until he reached a counter, where a flustered deputy booked him on a charge of perjury. A waiting bail bondsman stepped forward with a $2,000 bond that allowed Schrunk to go free. This was not how the new mayor wanted to gain the nation’s attention.
