The Papuan forests in Indonesia are under dangerous threat from deforestation despite its importance as a global biodiversity hotspot. Plantations and mining industries, as well as illegal logging, are rampant in the area. In September 2023, over a hundred Papuan indigenous youths came together for the Forest Defender Camp, organised by greenpeaceid and the local communities of Sadir Wet Yifi and Bentara Papua. They participated in discussions and workshops, also exchanged stories about their concerns and struggles to help protect customary forests in their respective territories. The forests store a significant amount of carbon, playing a crucial role in keeping the temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius. It is critical that the Indonesian government recognises the importance of these Papuan indigenous forests and lands in order to protect them from further loss. #Together4Forests #SavePapuanForests #SelamatkanHutanPapua More in bio 👆
