Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay! In New Orleans, better known as “Bulbancha”, the land of many tongues, the influence of Indigenous people on our culture, food and way of life are evident. With that said, we acknowledge and honor the Chitimacha, Coushatta, Choctaw, Houma, Tunica, Biloxi, Atakapa, Caddo, Natchez and Choupitoulas people found throughout Louisiana.⁠ ⁠ It’s also important to remember that despite being repeatedly “othered” in the bulk of incarceration data and making up less than 1% of our country’s total population, Native American people are over incarcerated in both federal prisons and jails throughout the US. According to prisonpolicy, sadly Native youth are swept into the juvenile legal system at an alarming rate larger than that of “white, Hispanic and Asian youth combined” in a similar fashion to Black youth for both low-level and nonviolent offenses.⁠ ⁠ Much like the Black youth and families that we serve, our organization stands in solidarity with the oppressed and ma...
