House Lawmakers Work Towards Electing A New Speaker On Capitol Hill After McCarthy Ousted As Speaker Of The House
Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted as speaker of the House during an unprecedented vote on October 03, 2023. The effort was led by a handful of conservative members of his own party, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), in response to McCarthy working with Democrats to prevent a government shutdown. U.S. House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) have stepped forward to run to replace him. The House is unable to conduct legislative business without an elected speaker, which has become increasingly urgent in the wake of the current war in Israel. Reps. Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise will participate in a closed-door candidates forum on Tuesday evening. | October 02-10, 2023 |
