A month ago, the Biden administration took the right action by canceling the unlawfully issued Trump-era leases to drill for oil on the the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's fragile coastal plain. Now we need the Biden administration to take it a step further and protect the refuge for good. This special place in northeastern Alaska is one of the last intact, wild landscapes of its kind and is an essential sanctuary for a wide diversity of remarkable species. Millions of migratory birds nest along its coast during the summer. Porcupine caribou herd birth and raise their young in the refuge each year. And, as sea ice melts away, polar bears increasingly rely on the refuge’s coastal plain to build dens where female bears give birth to cubs. The global importance of this place can’t be overstated and its biodiversity is truly irreplaceable. There’s no place for oil drilling in the refuge, period.
