Today we celebrate the master behind #BMWArtCar 9, Matazo Kayama 🎊 Born on September 24, 1927 in Kyoto, Kayama was a key figure for introducing modernism to traditional forms in Japanese art. When presented with the six cylinder BMW 535i, Kayama saw a fascinating and challenging scope for design. He wanted to explore BMW’s technology while evoking vivid associations with modern Japan. Referencing his work “Snow, Moon, and Flowers” created years earlier for the Tokyo National Museum of Arts, Kayama combined airbrush, Kirigane (metal cutting) and Arare (foil printing) for his design. Small pieces of silver, gold and aluminum were cut and transferred to the car’s body, giving elegance and dimension to the surface.
