Beyond devastated to learn of the passing of icon paulogrady I have always been inspired by and have the greatest respect for everything that Paul O’Grady has done for the world. The formidable Lily Savage was booting through doors in a pair of mules and fag in hand, smashing barriers with a bottle of Lambrini waaaay before drag was even remotely where it is today. I think for many of us, he was the first drag queen we saw - on mainstream TV anyway. The impact that Lily Savage had on the public consciousness towards drag queens was momentous. Paving the way so the likes of little old me could totter along in my heels, decades later. Lil may have ran off to the convent, but the man behind the garish persona did so much good in the world. Most notably all his work with Battersea Dog Home, but earlier in life he was also a support worker and campaigned for LGBTQ rights during a hostile time for our community.
