John Urschel '09 has joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (mit). Urschel, a former canisiushsfb standout who starred as an NFL offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, earned his Ph.D in mathematics from MIT in 2021. The mathematician returned to MIT as an assistant professor of mathematics this fall. Urschel earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Penn State, where he was also an Academic All-American football player. He was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and a junior fellow at Harvard. Urschel, who retired from the NFL in 2017, is the author of "Mind and Matter: A Life in Math and Football."
