It’s a strange relationship we have with Germany. For those who remember the 2002 World Cup, the scars from that fateful quarterfinal match against Die Mannschaft have yet to fade. The missed handball call from what could have been a Gregg Berhalter goal to give us a ticket to the semis is still etched in the collective memory of older USMNT fans. For the new generation, though, Germany is known as the go-to destination for our most talented bunch. And so Saturday came around. Gregg Berhalter now twenty years older and in command of this new crop of players, many of them forged in Germany. For a brief moment, it felt like it was meant to be the US’s night, but it wouldn’t take much from Germany to walk away with a 3-1 victory. That makes only 2 wins in 8 games for the USMNT against European opponents under Berhalter. It was only a friendly, but it’s another tough lesson on the road to 2026.
