When youth become involved with the juvenile justice system, they typically face repercussions beyond the immediate consequences. Additionally, the decision to incarcerate Black youth can have a lasting impact on their adult lives. ⁠ ⁠ We see these impacts firsthand when it comes to the education (or lack of) received while kids are incarcerated. Our report "Learning Interrupted" explores how the Louisiana Department of Education (LDE) and Office of Juvenile Justice (OJJ) are failing to educate our kids and how this follows them, as they move through life. ⁠ ⁠ In Louisiana, over 75% of students enrolled in OJJ schools fail to progress to the next grade level even after spending a year enrolled in OJJ schools, and nationally, only 1/3 of youth re-enroll in school after spending time incarcerated. ⁠ ⁠ #JusticeIs EVERY child receiving the education they deserve. Our children who are incarcerated must be set up to successfully reenter our communities as they leave incarceration behind them...
