Six former White Mississippi Sheriff’s deputies pled guilty to federal charges of repeatedly beating and torturing two Black men and planning to get away with it by covering it up. This is 2023. To think these officers would have perhaps gotten away with it had one of them not shot one of the Black men in the mouth during a mock execution. This happened in January but is just now coming to light in recent weeks. It’s not lost on me that these now former deputies admitted to doing this in the wake of the death of Tyre Nichols when the nations attention was gripped by yet another awful incident involving police. The Department of Justice says this was premeditated and orchestrated by these men who were operating under the banner of the law. They called themselves “The Goon Squad” for their willingness to use excessive force and not report it.
