Hundreds gathered today in Ft. Myers, Florida, to protest an anti-illegal immigration law that goes into effect July 1. Under this new Florida law, undocumented workers aren’t the only ones targeted. Those who transport them into the state and offer them jobs could face felony charges and thousands of dollars in fines. Hospitals that accept Medicaid will also now have to submit reports to the state about a patient’s legal status. These are just some of the provisions causing concern among immigrant rights advocates. The law also set aside $12 million for the migrant flights to other states used by Gov. Ron Desantis. The sponsor of the bill says it’s intended to safeguard Floridians.
Here is part of my report this morning from a very hot Ft. Myers.
