For a haunted house to be truly pee-your-pants scary, it comes down to one very important element: the actors. So what does it take to be a haunted house actor (yes, a real job)?
According to Amelia Huckel-Bauer, an actor at TerrorVision haunted house in NYC, it involves intense makeup (“to make it look like my flesh was ripped open”), character development (in her case, a dead bride), and special training to scare visitors *just* the right amount.
“A lot of the job is timing, the element of surprise, and the unknown.” she said. “You can improv as much as you want… sometimes I don’t have to say anything at all, they’re so freaked out.”
