As part of their unit on cosmetic science, our seventh grade Lions made all-natural lotion bars! 🫧 For this project, students researched methodology and all-natural, raw ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, and vitamin E to become experts at understanding what solvents can dissolve hydrophobic compounds — molecules that repel water — and what solvents are better for hydrophilic compounds — molecules that can absorb water. They also looked at different heating methods — water baths, hot plates, and microwaves — to see which produced more lotion bars per unit time. (Microwaving was found to be the safest and most efficient method!)
