In May 2023, UC Berkeley approved a plan that would shift the campus to renewable energy. A geothermal heating and cooling system will largely replace the natural gas cogeneration system which currently powers UC Berkeley’s temperature control system. The existing natural gas system is located near the RSF and baseball field, which can be seen emitting large billowing clouds. Eliminating the gas-powered system will eliminate about an estimated 75% of campus wide greenhouse gas emissions. This will account for nearly all of campus emissions, as the majority of the remaining 25% is attributed to campus-related travel. The entire operation will require an upgrade to campus’s energy transmission grid — connections between buildings — in addition to revamped energy storage capacity — batteries — within the buildings.
