Many Papuan indigenous youths worry about the same thing: the forests, which have been the source of life for their people for generations, are under threat of deforestation. Plantations and mining industries, as well as illegal logging, are rampant in the island.⁣ ⁣ In September 2023, together with the local communities of Sadir Wet Yifi and Bentara Papua, greenpeaceid held Forest Defender Camp in South Sorong, Papua. This camp was organized to encourage Papuan indigenous youths to play an active role in responding to environmental problems, as well as to empower them to demand the Indonesian government to recognise their customary forests and their rights as Indigenous Peoples.⁣ ⁣ The Papuan forests are the last remaining largest rainforest in Indonesia, and the island is home to more than 271 tribes of indigenous people.
