Upon his arrival in America, Benson found the cold embrace of winter to be extremely isolating. In addition to the cold, the lack of friends and transportation, his intense training schedule as a college athlete, and a language barrier compounded his loneliness and exacerbated his depression. Benson joined a support group for international student athletes that helped him find his footing and settle into life in America. Since then, Benson has found a healthy way to adapt to stressors and has made his home here. He is now a running coach, therapist, and community builder in Sioux Falls. This story is part of our #30Days30Stories project for #NationalSuicidePreventionMonth where we share stories of resilience from those struggling with mental health or suicide related challenges.
