Relationship violence is a global pandemic. Last year alone, 24 people in Minnesota died due to relationship violence. In 2023, we’ve already reached that number. This is not a ‘those people’ problem. This is a collective WE problem. Everyone knows someone. In fact, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner. Instead of asking questions like ‘why doesn’t she just leave’ or ‘why does he let a women hit him’, may we instead finally ask, WHAT CAN WE DO to support the people experiencing violence and the organizations who serve them? And, HOW CAN WE all show up to drive systematic and social change, dismantle patriarchal systems, and challenge the ways that feed violence and instead of starve it? You may ask, what can one person do? A LOT. But let’s at least start with believing survivors and showing up with compassion and empathy.
