The Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate sits on 50 landscaped acres just south of the Oakland zoo. As you walk up to the massive Neoclassical Revival mansion, painted a crisp, almost blinding white, its looming immensity cuts a dramatic line against a backdrop of giant eucalyptus trees. Out in front, a vast, rolling green lawn. Three giant columns in the portico are so big, they appear to hold up the house. Scary? That depends on whether you’ve seen the movie Burnt Offerings.
